David Hoffman (1874-1854) was one of the founders of the University of Maryland School of Law in 1816 and its first professor. Bill Sleeman's book, David Hoffman: Life, Letters and Lectures at the University of Maryland 1821-1837, (LawBook Exchange, 2010) offers a detailed biographical profile of Hoffman as well as a thoughtful analysis of his legal career. In addition, it returns to print Introductory Lectures, and Syllabus of a Course of Lectures, Delivered at the University of Maryland, the only known collection of Hoffman's 1837 work addressed to the Trustees of the University of Maryland. This work brought together Hoffman’s several lectures as well as the lengthy correspondence between Hoffman and the Trustees regarding the status of his Law Institute. Bill has also included a reprint of an auction catalog of Hoffman's books, compiled before Hoffman left the United States for England, which offers a fascinating view of the scope of Hoffman's book collecting interests interests in the middle of the nineteenth century.
